Having the Chimera linux build on arnauld with VMWare has been very inconvenient for me too. Usually I have to log in as administrator (if the machine is available) and start bilbo. I also run into the reverse situation where I have to shutdown bilbo so I can log in and run some Windows tests under my arnauld account.
A workable solution is to get a better version of VMWare on arnauld that can be run without having to remain logged in. I don't think arnauld is used so much that demos would be impaired by background compiles. Of course, a separate linux machine would be better.
The server version of VMware costs many thousands of dollars but lets you log out. On the other hand, with the Linux version of VMware (linux host, linux guest) you can run VMware on VNC and never worry about the desktop user logging out. Machine shutdown is still a problem, however. Dave
