Yes, the CDF format is intriguing.  Right now it's not useful for Chimera/Chimerax because "Data import and export are not supported from within CDF Player except for Wolfram-curated data sources".  When/if the CDF player supports importing 3D objects, we would consider supporting a compatible 3D object format. 

Also, from my perspective, CDF is so flexible and does so much that the CDF player could easily be more buggy/insecure than the Adobe Flash player.  So if CDF became popular, it would likely become an infection vector.  Not sure if the advantages out way the risk.

I'm more interested in web delivery of 3D objects, but I can see how the the CDF authoring tools could make generating content easier.

Are the developers of Chimera…

1)     Aware this format exists?

2)     Actively seeking ways to output cdf formatted renderings?  From a structural biology community standpoint, the ability to break free of the traditional static image figure and have the ability to render in 3D for a more interactive way would be AMAZING for the structural biology community

 

Just wanted to give you a heads up that this exists.  If we could output our “images” into cdf files, and further rendered in a document…J
