You can try changing the selection highlighting to see if that helps. Use Chimera menu Favorites / Preferences, select category Background, and switch "Selection highlight method" from outline to fill. Then try selecting something. If that works you could make that the default by pressing the Save button on the preferences pane where you made that change.
