Hi, how do I open mmCIF (.cif) files in Chimera. This is the standard format of structure files supplied by the Cambridge Structural Database. thanks, Jason Sharpe University of Toronto

Hi Jason, Chimera does not (yet) read mmCIF files. You would need to convert to PDB or MOL2 format. There are cif to pdb conversion programs on the web, for example, CIFTr and cif2pdb. I have not tried any of them. We have worked on reading mmCIF files in Chimera but have not solved the problems of creating correct bonds using templates. So we have not distributed our mmCIF reading code with Chimera. Tom
