Export Scene, Mesh Surface, wrl
Dear Chimera, I would like to export a scene of 1PRH (PDB of Cyclooxygenase) with a surface mesh, in wrl format for import into Cinema4D. (Screen shot attached) I am able to import scenes with ball and stick, sphere, solid surface, ribbons etc, in this way without problem. However, the mesh doesn’t seem to be in the wrl file once imported. The ribbon is there, but the mesh is not, or the mesh is not imaging for some reason. Am I missing something, or missing a step? Thank you so much for your assistance in advance, Kind regards, Cynthia Turner
Dear Cynthia Turner - I wonder if you realize that you have sent this huge, 8.2 MB eMail to hundreds (if not thousands) of members all over the world, some of which may have constrained connectivity and bandwidth limitations. Everything you need to know could have been illustrated with an image of a few kb - if an image is even necessary in the first place. Please use public resources responsibly. Thanks, B. Hi Cynthia, VRML export has limitations including lack of normals on dot and mesh surfaces… so even if they are shown they may be lighted strangely. <http://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimera/docs/UsersGuide/export.html> If you export the solid surface instead, maybe in Cinema4D you can convert those triangles into mesh. I don’t use that type of software, I’m just making a guess. There is a “meshmol” command to convert wire mesh into stick mesh in Chimera, but I imagine all those sticks would yield a far too huge and unwieldy export file. <http://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimera/docs/UsersGuide/midas/meshmol.html> Maybe others on this list will have more definite or practical suggestions. Hi Cynthia, I made a surface, showed it as mesh, used File / Export Scene… choosing VRML output, then read the VRML file back into Chimera and it displayed it correctly. So the file does contain the mesh. It is probably a Cinema4d issue not a Chimera issue causing your problem. Tom
