
Hi, I have been trying to recreate the paper viruses shown on ViperDB and on your own site here: http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/chimera/data/kids-day-apr2008/papervirus.html How did you keep the structure within the confines of the triangular facets? Is this possible within the flatten-icosahedron command, or was there some additional manual processing involved? Hi David, Increasing the Radius in the Flatten Icosahedron dialog decreases the “overhang.” <http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/chimera/docs/ContributedSoftware/flatten/flatten.htm...> However, if I understand correctly, it may be best to keep a little overhang instead of excessive empty space. Squinting at the images Tom Goddard made, it appears the surfaces do extend beyond the triangles. There is some discussion in the link above as to how you might want to tile the flattened image in a separate application such as GIMP, so that the surfaces on the paper model wrap around in all of the places that they should.
