I am using Chimera build version 1 build 2176 on my Gentoo Linux platform, with ati firegl 8700 graphic card. After I upgraded the ati-drivers from 8.14.13 to 8.16.20, chimera will hang the whole system, everything dead, including the keyboard. I can only see the chimera window frame (the border), nothing else. What could be the problem? Thanks. Yang

Hi Yang, I noticed that Chimera 1.2176 on Windows with a FireGL T2 graphics card hangs the whole system (reboot required) when showing volume data surfaces. I reported it to the Chimera bug database, bug 2095. http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/cgi-bin/gnatsweb.pl This is certainly a graphics driver bug, not a Chimera problem. It may be possible to change the settings for your graphics driver (level of acceleration, anti-aliasing, etc...) to work-around the system hang. If that does not work you can reinstall the older driver. In general I avoid updating my graphics driver unless the current one has a problem. New driver releases on average seem to introduce as many new problems as they solve. Tom

Well, it sounds like the graphics driver is buggy. The latest Linux version from ATI is version 8.18.6. Please try the lastest version. If that still fails, let us know, and downgrade to 8.14.13. We have also seen a similar hanging problem when chimera is started up from a terminal window and then the user types control-Z to suspend chimera. The workaround is to "not do that" and to start a new terminal window to work in. Hope this helps, Greg Couch UCSF Computer Graphics Lab gregc@cgl.ucsf.edu

Hi, Greg and Tom, It's just lucky to have a new ati-driver released at the same moment. Yes. After upgraded to 8.18.6, everything came back to normal, and the rendering become even faster. Thank you for your help! Yang Greg Couch wrote:
