Hi, What nvidia graphics cards are recommended to work with UCSF Chimera under Debian Linux? What are better - quadro series or geforce? Unfortunately I have seen only special topics about, for example, 3d graphics. So I don't have holistic view of the subject. Many thanks in advance. Dmitry.

All of the GeForce and Quadro NVIDIA graphics cards should work with UCSF Chimera under Debian Linux. That said, stay away from the ones that are designed for business graphics, like the NVS series, instead of for 3D graphics. Also, make sure you use the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver instead of the open-source one. If you want view your data on a 3D TV or other 3D stereo display, then, on Linux, you will need a Quadro graphics card. Otherwise, a GeForce card is fine. Within the GeForce or Quadro lines, the more expensive cards are better. And between GeForce and Quadro, you generally get more performance, for the same amount of money, with a GeForce card. Take a look at our benchmark results, at http://plato.cgl.ucsf.edu/trac/chimera/wiki/benchmarks, for some idea of the relative performance of various graphics cards. I'd also recommend looking at Tom's Hardware latest "Best Graphics Cards For The Money" article at http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html. personnaly i'm using a nvidia 8600 GTS on my desktop computer and it work fine under fedora 18, and we have a graphical computer with a nvidia quadro fx 3800 under fedora 17, with a flat panel 3D ready (120Hz) and the stereo work fine with the nvidia 3D glasses.
