If Chimera works and ChimeraX does not it may be that your system graphics driver does not support the more modern OpenGL graphics version (3.3) required by ChimeraX.

  Our UCSF servers are down -- below is a PDF of the ChimeraX troubleshooting page which talks about inadequate graphics drivers.  Maybe starting in debug mode will indicate if that is a problem.
