Hi Matthias,

Unfortunately one model of Mac Book Pro, MacBookPro16,2 with Intel graphics has this graphics driver bug where it draws thousands of small box shapes when silhouettes are enabled.  Every other model of Mac works correctly, and this bug has never been reported on Windows or Linux.  Unfortunately Apple deprecated the OpenGL graphics standard about 6 years ago when they introduced their proprietary Metal graphics.  So I don't expect Apple to ever fix this.  Apple Intel graphics drivers also frequently crash ChimeraX.  On the good side the Apple M1/M2 graphics has been rock solid, only one or two crashes reported in 3 years.

So the only solution is to use a different computer.  You can save a ChimeraX session (file suffix .cxs) on your Mac and open it on another computer to save an image.

Dear ChimeraX team,

I am having issues when using silhouettes and saving an image while specifying the pixel size, as I get the artefacts shown in the attached image. If I don’t use silhouettes or don’t specify the pixel size things look fine. I updated to the latest daily version and uninstalled Isolde and ArtiaX, but the problem persist. I work on a MacBook Pro  under Mac OS Ventura 13.5.2. Any ideas for fixes?

Many thanks,

Matthias
