The answer is yes, you can add compact buttons to custom toolbars.  Note that it is a section attribute, not a button attribute.  So all of the buttons in a section will be compact.

While I am surprised you didn't find the compact attribute on the main branch, you should ignore the main branch.  We branch from develop to make releases.

Dear ChimeraX developers, 

Is it possible to add compact buttons to custom toolbars like this in main ChimeraX? I can only create full size buttons like the ones in the "Lighting & Effects" section. I saw compact as a provider attribute only on the development branch but not in the main branch.
