Dear ChimeraX users! I am considering purchasing one of the recent macbook pro equipped with the modern M2 or M3 apple chips. Assuming that presently I am using the 2015 model equipped with the i7 4 core cpu and discrete radeon gpu, what should be expected increase of the performance in the case of recording of MD movies with ChimeraX using the performance of a new mac ?? Many thanks in advance Enrico

Hi Enrico, This page from a few years ago compares the speed of the ChimeraX Intel Mac version versus the ChimeraX M1 Mac version. https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimerax/data/czi-nov2021/apple_m1.html Of course the new machines are faster. The only way to find out how much faster in any specific, for example your movies with MD trajectories, you would have to test it. You would have to find someone with a newer Mac and try on your data to know. Two of the nicest features of the Apple ARM Macs (M1/M2/M3) is that the laptops have much longer battery life, and the OpenGL graphics driver that ChimeraX uses for 3D graphics never crashes on the ARM Macs, while the Intel Mac graphics driver crashes pretty often (we get 100 bug reports for that per year). Okay thank you ! Do we have some improvements in terms of quality of the videos e g some specific rendering features that could be only used with Mac cpus ?? Yours sincerely Enrico Le ven. 2 févr. 2024 à 21:41, Tom Goddard <goddard@sonic.net> a écrit :

Hello, There aren't any mac-specific quality settings in the ChimeraX commands, if that's what you mean. The only mentions of "Mac" in the movie command help are about the default movie format and file locations: <https://rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimerax/docs/user/commands/movie.html> ...and there aren't any mentions of it in the "graphics quality" help: <https://rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimerax/docs/user/commands/graphics.html#quality> From what Tom said, I interpret that to mean that for a given set of display settings and ChimeraX contents, the recording would be faster on newer Mac chips than the older ones, and you would just have to try it to find out how much speedup there is for your specific data and settings.
