Request for Academic Use Confirmation Document – ChimeraX Demonstration Class

Dear UCSF ChimeraX Team, My name is Emanuell Santos, I am a pharmacist, Ph.D. in Drug Development Technology, and the coordinator of the Pharmacy program at a private Brazilian college. I also teach Medicinal Chemistry for both Pharmacy and Medical students. I am reaching out to respectfully request your support in including UCSF ChimeraX in a practical session of my Medicinal Chemistry course. The goal is to introduce students to molecular modeling approaches through a demonstrative class where they can also explore some of the software’s functionalities directly. This initiative is aligned with national educational guidelines from our Ministry of Education, which emphasize the inclusion of innovative and technological methodologies in undergraduate teaching. I plan to use the free academic version of ChimeraX solely for educational purposes and without any commercial intent. I kindly ask whether it would be possible to obtain a brief statement or document from UCSF (even if generic) confirming that such use falls within the allowed academic scope. This would be helpful in documenting compliance with institutional and governmental regulations. I greatly appreciate your attention and support, and I look forward to your response. Warm regards, Emanuell Santos Coordinator – Pharmacy Program FACENE/RN -- Prof. Dr. Emanuell dos Santos Silva *Coordenação de Farmácia - FACENE/RN* Por favor, confirmar o recebimento deste e-mail.

Dear Professor, We do not have such a document, nor the staffing to create documents for the thousands of academic users. However, you can use this e-mail message as the proof. I am a member of the UCSF ChimeraX development team. Please rest assured that what you describe is for educational (academic) purposes, not commercial. As it says on our website "ChimeraX can be downloaded free of charge for academic, government, nonprofit, and personal use." UCSF ChimeraX is used in many college and university courses all over the world, all under the free academic license, and we do not require advance notice of such use. Students, professors, and others at your institution can freely download software for this purpose. Clicking a download link shows the free academic license, and the user only needs to click the "Accept" button at the bottom of it to continue the download. We are happy to hear that ChimeraX will be used in your teaching! I hope this helps, Elaine ----- Elaine C. Dear Elaine, Thank you very much for your kind and thoughtful reply. I truly appreciate your time and consideration in clarifying the terms of academic use for UCSF ChimeraX.
