ChimeraX-daily (1.9, 5 Aug 2024); Log panel stealing focus

Hi, Downloaded the above Daily (macOS 14.5, Universal), primarily for the workaround retrieving mmCIFs containing an underscore (#15557). I noticed that the Log toolpanel steals focus whenever it updates. Perhaps something that has already been dealt with? Otherwise, thought I should post it here. Cheers, Yang

Hi Yang, We changed the code to give the focus to windows that are showing themselves, which seemed like a harmless improvement, but might be a problem when that window is the Log. Can you describe your usage scenario where giving the Log the focus is interfering with what you are doing, so I can examine alternatives that might work better (or, if I can't find one, then revert to the previous behavior). Thanks! --Eric Eric Pettersen UCSF Computer Graphics Lab

Hi Eric, Thanks for the explanation. Good to know it's by design. To make more efficient use of space, I have several tools--Log, Models, Volume Viewer, ISOLDE (when it's activated)--docked and tabbed within the same panel. Any output including command confirmations switches the active tab to Log. Cheers, Yang

Hello, I also often tab several tools, including the Log, but I have use cases in which I’d like the Log to take the focus when running a command so I can see the result without manually switching tabs (I haven’t used the daily build yet). So maybe it would be good to make this behavior configurable? Cheers, Guillaume Typed on a phone

Addendum: The current implementation leads to an additional oddity, when the Log panel is closed altogether, outputs trigger its reappearance.

In tomorrow’s build, the Log will no longer raise/show itself by default when new content is logged. It can be changed to raise/show itself on a temporary basis by checking “Show Log If New Content” in the Log’s context menu, or on a permanent basis by doing the same in the the Log section of ChimeraX’s preferences (and then clicking Save). --Eric Eric Pettersen UCSF Computer Graphics Lab
