Dear Sir/Madam, I would like to ask what are the system requirements in order to run Chimera and ChimeraX in terms of the RAM and CPU specifications? Thank you. Regards, Armin Delnia
Hello Armin, This e-mail address is for commercial licensing requests. For questions about using the program(s) we recommend chimerax-users@cgl.ucsf.edu and/or chimera-users@cgl.ucsf.edu. <https://rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimerax/docs/contact.html> <https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimera/docs/feedback.html> I don't have a specific answer for you, but I CC'd chimerax-users@cgl.ucsf.edu on this message so you don't need to do anything else this time. I only have the following general information: the download pages say which operating systems are supported for running the programs. The ChimeraX download page also recommends using a computer <4 years old. <https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimerax/download.html> <https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimera/download.html> Best, Elaine ----- Elaine C. Also, for Chimera, there are benchmarks for various CPUs and graphics cards here: https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/trac/chimera/wiki/benchmarks <https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/trac/chimera/wiki/benchmarks> --Eric Eric Pettersen UCSF Computer Graphics Lab

ChimeraX runs fine with 8 GB of memory and any CPU from the last 10 years, so more or less any machine will do. We used to say your machine should be less than 4 years old but we said that about 5 years ago. Of course if you look at big data like ten 1 Gbyte EM maps and 10 structures with half a million atoms you might do better with 64 GB and a modern CPU. Also important is the GPU. Intel graphics in many laptops is adequate, but again big data would rotate the view and compute shadowed lighting faster with a gaming video card. Tom
