UNIVERSITÄT DES SAARLANDES - W1 Computational Biology - Frist: 01.12.2011 Saarland University is a Campus university with international alignment and pronounced research profile. A number of research institutes in the vicinity of the university and dedicated support for the foundation of start up companies bring about an ideal field for innovation and technology transfer. The Center for Bioinformatics (CBI) at Saarland University is one of the five centers for excellence for Computational Biology that received startup funding by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). In the CBI 10 institutes of Saarland University from the areas of life sciences, mathematics and informatics collaborate with the research divisions of the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence GmbH (DFKI) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering. Saarland University is seeking an outstanding scientist for the full-time position of a Junior Professor for Computational Biology (W1) offered for a three-year term, with a possible extension of another three years, dependable on a teaching evaluation and an external evaluation of the research activities. We are seeking to attract an individual with an excellent international reputation in Computational Biology. The applicant must have a Ph.D. degree and should exhibit internationally regarded previous research results in the field of computational biology. The position is supposed to strengthen the focus of the center on the analysis of the genetic, epigenetic, or transcriptomics basis of diseases, both concerning the human host and, in the case of infections, the pathogen. Basic research as well as research targeted towards new approaches in diagnosis, prognosis and therapy are considered. Research on evolutionary processes in disease development is of special interest. We expect the candidate to participate in collaborative interdisciplinary research projects with partners both on and off campus. The candidate is expected to participate in teaching in the curricula of the center in computational biology and related study programs. The teaching requirement amounts to 4 SWS (6 credits) per semester. Female candidates are encouraged to apply and will be treated favorably in case of equal qualification.
