INVITATION: I wish to invite applications for postdoctoral research at NIST. My laboratory program focuses on topics involving hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) of proteins and biological drugs; however, the applicant needs no prior experience in this area. BACKGROUND: Through a head-to-head competition administered by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, NIST awards approximately 60 new fellowships to recent PhD recipients in sciences, mathematics, and engineering. The competition is judged from each applicant’s research proposal, letters of reference, transcripts, and publications. Appointments are for two years at an annual stipend of $66,919 per year, plus moving expenses, an allowance for professional expenses and travel, and cost-shared health insurance. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Associateships are awarded to persons who have held the doctorate for less than five years at the time of application. (Candidates may apply before their PhD degree is conferred.) Electronic applications for the next competition are due on 1 AUG (5:00 PM EST), and supporting documents (e.g., letters, transcripts) must be received by 15 AUG (5:00 PM EST). Postdoctoral appointments are usually announced in late SEP for start dates beginning in JAN-JUN 2016 (sometimes earlier). Also, NIST/NRC will conduct a second competition with an application deadline of 1 FEB 2016 for start dates between JUN-DEC 2016.

THE PROPOSAL: The application includes a proposal describing research that the candidate will conduct during his/her tenure. My interests are quite broad and afford much creativity to the candidate:

· H/D exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) for biopharmaceutical analysis

· Expanding the application of HDX-MS to new protein types (e.g., trans-membrane proteins),

· Studies of protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions, and

· Enhancing HDX-MS resolution and dynamic range.
