Re: [Chimera-users] [chimera-dev] small suggestion regarding savepos

Hi JD, I think you're right: closing a session should clear saved positions. In tomorrow's build that's what will happen. --Eric Eric Pettersen UCSF Computer Graphics Lab http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu On Jul 22, 2009, at 4:20 AM, Jean Didier Pie Marechal wrote:
Dear all,
I see that when I close a session, the savepos list continues containing the poses I defined for my anterior session. May be that is something you want to have this way, but I was wondering if the savepos (with an option for example) could list only the poses for the working session.
All the best, JD

Hi, does this mean that saved positions will be just gone, or that they will be saved with the session file? I would be strongly in favor of the second option, since saved positions can represent quite a bit of work.. cheers, Nils

Closing a session tries to get Chimera back to it's original "clean slate" startup state as much as possible. If you wanted saved positions to be retained you would do something other than "Close session" (e.g. close all open models instead). --Eric On Jul 22, 2009, at 12:05 PM, Nils Becker wrote:

So the answer is yes, the positions are saved in session files, just make sure you save the session before closing it. - Greg On Wed, 22 Jul 2009, Eric Pettersen wrote:

Hi Eric, agreed. my concern was more about restoring a session. I think it would be good to be able to get back to the same state as immediately before closing the session, including the saved positions. Nils Eric Pettersen wrote:

Hi Nils, Are you suggesting that the session should automatically save when it is closed? Currently it does not do that -- the session only saves when you specifically indicate it should be saved. It sounds a little dangerous to have the session automatically overwrite itself when closed -- often I'll start with a session I want to keep, and then apply various changes I do not want to save. Our current philosophy is that closing a session is just to clear everything out in one step so you can start something new. You can close a session regardless of whether you actually started with a session file. I personally would not want closing the session to automatically save a file, but perhaps there could be a preference, or a dialog to ask, or a preference about whether to show a dialog to ask! If you specifically save a session, it will restore in the position at the time of saving, and include all the saved positions since the last "close session" or startup, or that were in the session already when you started it.
