Hello, I am having troubles saving my animations on my Mac OS. I get this error when I record and save my animation: An error occurred during encoding. See Reply Log for details. Error during MPEG encoding: ----------------------------- Exit value: -1 Error message: Could not find ffmpeg executable —————————————— I googled some solutions regarding “ffmpeg” and I believe I successfully installed it to my terminal, but I am still receiving the same error. Thank you, Natalie Walsh

Hi Natalie, The ffmpeg executable was mistakenly omitted from the 1.17 releases. We are working on a 1.17.2 release that will include it, but it might still be a day or three before that's available. Depending on your timeline, I think your options are: (1) Wait for the 1.17.2 release. (2) Install the older 1.16 release for just this one purpose. You can have multiple different versions installed without problem. (3) Try to put the ffmpeg executable you have into Chimera.app/Contents/Resources/bin, I'm not 100% certain that will work due to Apple's security policies, but it might. --Eric Eric Pettersen UCSF Computer Graphics Lab

Hi Natalie, Sorry, you are right that it is still missing from the 1.17.2 release. However, you can just use the daily build until we get a 1.17.3 release out. ffmpeg is in the daily build. --Eric Eric Pettersen UCSF Computer Graphics Lab

Hello, I have installed that 1.17.3 release and am no longer getting the ffmpeg error, yay! But, ever file type offered for saving animations (ex: Theora, Quicktime, MPEG, ect.) is not opening on my computer. I have recorded the animation under every file type offered and the file will then show up on my desktop but then say I cannot open it because I do not have the right applications. I have opened .mp4 and .mov several times on my computer, do you know why they are not working now? Thanks for the help, Natalie ________________________________ From: Eric Pettersen <pett@cgl.ucsf.edu> Sent: Thursday, July 6, 2023 12:33 PM To: Natalie Walsh <natalie.walsh@slu.edu> Cc: chimera-users@cgl.ucsf.edu List <chimera-users@cgl.ucsf.edu> Subject: Re: [External] [Chimera-users] Saving Animations on Mac OS CAUTION: This email is from an external source. Hi Natalie, When I save a .mp4 (either MPEG or H.264) from Chimera on my Mac, I have no trouble opening it afterward. In the Finder for one of these files you’ve saved, can you use the File→Get Info menu item to get a dialog with more detailed information about the file. In the “General” section of that dialog doe it say the “Kind:” is “Media File”, and that its “Size:” is not zero? In the “Open with:” section, does it say “Quicktime Player (default)”? --Eric Eric Pettersen UCSF Computer Graphics Lab
