Hello, I would like to suggest an improvement in the GUI: when a data set of multiple files is opened (for example multiple .cube files) the Volume Viewer displays options (including hide / show) for only 3 of them. There is no scroll up or down. Resizing the window does not change the number of loaded files to manipulate for visualization. Let's say I want to browse a set of 12 molecular orbitals - I have to manually click on each one in the "Data set list", then click the hide (eye) icon in the detailed options list below and do this for all molecular orbitals / .cube files, otherwise Chimera visualized all of them at the same time. It is simply not convinient to hide and show them if I want to view more than 3 files in the Volume Viewer. In ChimeraX that issue does not exist, yet it lacks working linux binaries (too many dependencies to cover outside of distros like debian ot red hat, especially if the dependencies are not explicitly mentioned and the distro does not provide them with a package manager). Best Regards, Dobromir
Hi Dobromir, In Chimera you can increase the number of datasets shown: in Volume Viewer, choose Features...Data display options, <https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimera/docs/ContributedSoftware/volumeviewer/volumeviewer.html#disp-options> ...and then te dialog will have an option "Maximum number of histograms shown" that you can increase from the default 3. I hope this helps, Elaine ----- Elaine C. Meng, Ph.D. UCSF Chimera(X) team Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry University of California, San Francisco

Hi Elaine, thank you, it does kind of help. But when I have to browse multiple times between let's say 12 or more orbitals it is still not very helpful. There isn't enough space on the screen to view all the histograms and if the number is more than 5 or 6 it the Volume Viewer window shows only histograms and not any other options even if I tick them from Features ... it kind of bugs out. A scroll for the histograms (with a bar and with the mouse wheel) would be very appreciated :D Best Regards, Dobromir ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elaine Meng" <meng@cgl.ucsf.edu> To: "Добромир Калчевски" <dobromirk@uni-sofia.bg> Cc: "chimera-users" <chimera-users@cgl.ucsf.edu> Sent: Sunday, December 18, 2022 8:00:00 PM Subject: Re: [Chimera-users] Chimera Hi Dobromir, In Chimera you can increase the number of datasets shown: in Volume Viewer, choose Features...Data display options, <https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimera/docs/ContributedSoftware/volumeviewer/volumeviewer.html#disp-options> ...and then te dialog will have an option "Maximum number of histograms shown" that you can increase from the default 3. Hi Dobromir, As you mention ChimeraX allows scrolling through the volume histograms. We no longer have any funding to develop Chimera, so all our effort has been on ChimeraX for more than 6 years. So you should of course use ChimeraX. I saw in another post from you that you have trouble running ChimeraX on Clear Linux because of missing dependencies. Did you try the "Generic Linux" ChimeraX distribution which is a *.tar.gz file that is intended to have all the dependencies? It may or may not work because Linux distributions are all different and your Linux may or may not have the system libraries that the Generic Linux ChimeraX expects. Tom
