Hi Marta, There is currently no flag to suppress this behavior. There really shouldn’t even be a flag — it should just automatically revert the Greek characters to plain text when writing mmCIF or PDB files. I will open a ticket in our bug-tracking database requesting this change with you cc’ed so that you will be notified of updates. It might take us awhile to find the time to fix it.

After saving the file as cif format ALPHA is not longer a string but a GREEK character:
_entity.pdbx_description "hemoglobin subunit α"
Is there any flag in the save command that disables this conversion from plain ASCII to UTF-8?
