Dear ChimeraX team, I just downloaded/installed ChimeraX (64 for windows, latest daily build & PC running Windows 7) but when starting the programs hangs with the message Initializing Core and an image of the group (Nice picture though!). Hi Hernando, What, you don’t want to see our pictures on your computer constantly? :-) Unfortunately, it might be that your computer is too old… on the ChimeraX download page we suggest using computers from within the last 3 years to run ChimeraX. Hi Hernando, This was a bug in ChimeraX, probably recently introduced where it fails the first time you try to start it because its toolshed cache file does not exist. I’ve fixed it — in tonight’s build if it succeeds. Thanks for reporting the problem. Tom

The latest daily version doesn't hang but the program closes immediately after the main window opens. Hi Hernando, I just tried last night’s ChimeraX build on a new Windows 7 account and it started fine. Possibly your graphics driver is not adequate (requires OpenGL 3.3 core profile support or higher) — ideally it should show a warning dialog if that happened, but I have not tested that situation. Can you run ChimeraX from a command prompt with the —debug flag and send the output to chimerax-bugs@cgl.ucsf.edu <mailto:chimerax-bugs@cgl.ucsf.edu>? Tom

Hi Hernando, I managed to reproduce this where ChimeraX starts on an old Windows 7 machine, seems to flash an error dialog then vanishes. I’ll debug it. Maybe no one ever said but ChimeraX is compiled on Windows 10 and we don’t intend to support Windows 7 — if it works on that it just luck. That said, it does work without problems on our Windows 7 machine which has an up to date graphics driver. Tom
