Dear ChimeraX Team, I'm trying to use ChimeraX on my VM (Ubuntu 20.04.01), but I'm having the error on the screenshot attached below. I tried to update OpenGL to 3.3, and on the terminal it seems that it installed everything but then when I try to open again I'm getting the same issue. I tried to update OpenGL following this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/8tpq05/how_can_update_my_display_dr... But always when I do the command: glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version" , it shows: "OpenGL version string: 3.1 Mesa 21.0.3". Not sure why it is not updating to 3.3 while all the other packages are upgraded. Could you please advice? Whether or not you can update your virtual machine to OpenGL 3.3 depends if your virtual machine supports it or not -- that is, it is a (virtual) hardware problem, not a software problem. For example, with Oracle VirtualBox on Windows, it is not possible at this time. I don't have experience with other virtual machine software to know which ones support OpenGL 3.3. If they do, the OpenGL provided by the host operating system would need to be OpenGL 3.3 or higher, and the virtual machine would need to configured to use the host's OpenGL. If you do find a virtual machine that supports OpenGL 3.3, please let us know. As please remember, ChimeraX's performance will be lower when running in a virtual machine. If you can view the data with a native version of ChimeraX, you'll be much happier. Good luck, Greg On 10/20/2021 1:01 PM, Amaya Cuesta, Joan via ChimeraX-users wrote:

Just to follow up. I tried VMware Workstation 16 Player on Windows 10 (free for non-commercial use), and ran Ubuntu 20.04 in it. And I was able to run ChimeraX in the virtual machine after I enabled "3D graphics" in the Display settings. I also increased the amount of graphics memory allocated, but it is unclear if that was necessary. The host machine is running Windows 10 with an NVidia GeForce GTX 970 and the latest graphics driver. So there exists at least one virtual machine product that can do OpenGL 3.3 (4.1 in my case) if the host is powerful enough. -- Greg On 10/20/2021 3:33 PM, Greg Couch via ChimeraX-users wrote:

Hello, My Ubuntu 20.04 in Oracle VM VirtualBox can run ChimeraX 1.2.5 and the latest daily build without any issues (aside from the VM lag). It looks like it only has OpenGL ES version 3.2, OpenGL version 3.1, and my host computer (Windows) has OpenGL version 4.6. I don't get any warning when launching ChimeraX in my VM. My Oracle VirtualBox version is 6.1.26 r145957. I've only used it couple of times, and I don't recall changing any settings. I don't know why it works for me and not you, but let me know if I can share additional info or settings. Like Greg said, ChimeraX's performance on my VM is not great. I only used this VM to figure out why menus on my bundle's tools weren't appearing for some users. The Ubuntu desktop environment I installed (Unity) is one of the desktop environments with a magical setting that made my menus disappear. I don't think I'd recommend using a VM outside of debugging things like this if you can run a native version of ChimeraX. Hi Tony, There is a ChimeraX command "graphics driver" that reports in the Log panel what graphics driver you are using. Definitely the graphics will not work if it does not support OpenGL 3.3 so you must have that. By the way OpenGL 3.3 came out in 2010. So almost any new driver will have OpenGL 4.5 or 4.6 support and those all provide 3.3 support which is what ChimeraX requires. Tom

Tom, Apparently I am using OpenGL 4.5. I ran the glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version" command and just saw 3.1. Running glxinfo | grep OpenGL shows "OpenGL core profile version string: 4.5 (Core Profile) Mesa 21.0.3", among other things.
