In addition to establishing a vigorous research program, the new faculty will participate in teaching biochemistry or chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates working in all areas of research will be considered. We have a healthy graduate program with each faculty member taking about one new graduate student a year, as well as excellent support facilities and a large amount of shared research equipment. Because the Biochemistry Program is situated within the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, there are many opportunities to interact with chemistry faculty, some of whom have considerable interest in biochemistry. We also have a joint graduate program with the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, located on campus, thus there are excellent interactions with molecular biologists and geneticists. There are strong connections between biochemistry and the physical sciences, and these connections are supported by an NIH-funded training program in Biophysics. Finally, we moved into a new state of the art Jennie Smoley Caruthers Biotechnology Building about 1 year ago which also houses the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the BioFrontiers Institute, providing ample opportunity for cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary interactions. The University has a strong interest in recruiting minority and women for faculty positions. There is a general feeling that simply stating in advertisements that "The University of Colorado is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Institution" is not enough.
